How To Put On A Horse Blanket – With Pete Kyle

A Blanket With Front Buckles

Make sure the hooks are undone
Pete Kyle with Virtual Horse Help tells you that you should unclip the horses blanket before putting the blanket on your horse
Have a halter on your horse and a good hold on him while you put the blanket on.
Halter your horse so that you securely have your horse to where you or the horse cannot be put in a position to get hurt.
Throw the blanket over his back and adjust it to sit correctly.

Make sure if your horse is new to being blanketed that you slowly put the blanket on them so they do not get scared and believe it is bad for them. Keep a hold of your halter and stay near the shoulder of the horse to keep your self safe in case the horse does spook. Also, it is ok to let the horse smell the blanket and other desensitizing techniques so the horse does not get spooked.

Connect the underside buckles crisscrossed over each other to give a better pull on the blanket and hold it even on both sides.

A Blanket With No Front Buckles

With a closed front, slip the lead rope through the head hole and slip the blanket sideways over their head as not to scare them.

Keeping a hold of their head throw the blanket over their body and adjust it to fit.

Staying toward the front of their body adjust the front strap underneath.

When you go to connect the back straps run your hand down their leg so they know you are coming toward that area so you don’t scare the them.
Pete Kyle with Virtual Horse Help tells you to run your hand down their leg when you are attaching straps that run underneath their legs.
Repeat on the other side again running your hand from the top of their hip down their leg so they know you’re there.
Pete Kyle with Virtual Horse Help tells you to run your hand down a horses legs before attaching strap so you do not scare your horse.
Adjust to make sure the blanket is sitting correctly and you are done putting on your horses blanket!
